By incorporating these considerations, a new WSN topology design tailored to bridge SHM requirements is proposed. The framework aims to maximize system lifetime while considering factors like sensor coverage, connectivity, energy consumption, component reliability, and cyber security. To overcome the unique security and longevity dilemma of WSN-SHM systems for bridges, this thesis proposes a novel modeling framework. Implementing security measures like encryption and authentication reduces energy resources, impacting lifetime. Yet, WSNs introduce vulnerabilities, making the sensor nodes susceptible to physical and cyber-attacks.

To address this challenge, various solutions have been proposed to increase WSN longevity. However, they face limitations in battery capacity, affecting their overall lifetime. WSNs are an optimal choice for instrumenting highway bridges for remote SHM. However, despite their potential, WSNs for bridge SHM have mostly remained limited to civil engineering laboratories and have not been extensively deployed in real-world transportation infrastructures. When it comes to instrumenting highway bridges for remote SHM, WSNs present themselves as an optimal design choice. Remote SHM systems, popular for bridge monitoring, provide real-time data without frequent on-site visits. Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems have gained prominence, particularly for assessing bridge integrity and scheduling safety maintenance. WSNs have diverse applications, including in smart cities and driverless cars. The vision is to enhance the students' learning experience and develop them as STEM scholars. Staff of the STEM Learning Lab strive to provide differentiated support that is tailored to students' needs. Recognizing that students come with different experiences, backgrounds, and levels of comfort in STEM areas, the Lab focuses on students from underrepresented populations as well as all undergraduate and graduate students. Located in the Science & Engineering (SENG) building, room 217, the mission of the STEM Learning Lab is to improve and advance STEM learning and education of UMass Dartmouth students in order to increase retention and graduation in fields such as Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Engineering, and Physics, and prepare students for careers in STEM fields. The STEM Learning Lab is part of the Academic Resource Center (ARC), a federal TRiO Student Support Service program in operation since 1976.
